Susan Wakil Health Building shortlisted for the 2021 Design Institute of Australia Awards

Designed by Billard Leece Partnership and Diller Scofidio + Renfro the Susan Wakil Health Building is the response to an iterative design process to create a student centric education model that emphasised creation and collaboration.

The building is a state-of-the-art facility at the forefront of innovation, learning, and policy for the future of healthcare education and research.

The design creates a new common ground for the University, the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and the Charles Perkins Centre, while respecting the site’s historic significance as a meeting place. A network of open spaces grows from the landscape — lifting, shaping, and connecting it at every level from inside to outside. A ‘cleave’ within the volume of the building draws light down to the garden throughout the year, connecting the academic workplaces and teaching spaces within.

A place of collaborative research, with agile environments for multidisciplinary teaching and learning across all health disciplines, the design of this building and the entire health precinct for the University of Sydney will inspire the next generation of leaders in their  eld.

The Susan Wakil Health Building is emblematic of the values and vision of BLP as we work towards delivering spaces of wellness through human-centric design by creating tomorrow's places for working, learning, and healing.
