Frontek - LEED Certification Potential

What is LEED Certification?

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. LEED Certification is an internationally recognised system for certifying sustainable buildings. It serves as a rating-based program providing third-party verification of green buildings.

The LEED rating system is developed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and has become a benchmark for green building certification in construction industry.

Buildings are assessed according to the LEED system earning points in different categories. Depending on the number of points achieved, projects earn one of 4 certification levels: Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum. Each level represents a higher commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

LEED offers various rating systems tailored to specific building types or projects. Developers determine which rating system is right for their project based on typology. The different rating systems are:

  • Building Design and Construction (BD+C).

  • Residential (also BD+C).

  • Interior Design and Construction (ID+C).

  • Building Operations and Maintenance (O+M).

  • Neighbourhood Development (ND).

How is LEED Certification involved in the Construction Industry?

Certifying buildings for sustainability adds value and promotes environmental impact reduction. In an era where environmental awareness is a main concern for society, the construction industry benefits from demonstrating its commitment to greener development through LEED certification.

Building owners and developers pursue LEED certification for their projects as it offers numerous benefits for them, as well as their clients or occupants. The LEED system certifies the project’s sustainability, environmental responsibility, and environmental impact reduction.

How are suppliers involved in LEED Certification?

The rating system evaluates various categories, each with its own requirements and contributors. Suppliers play a crucial role by providing products that directly impact a building's LEED certification by contributing to specific categories.

Suppliers have the capability to influence a project’s LEED rating by offering more sustainable products. Moreover, they can adapt and improve product and manufacturing processes to enhance LEED contribution gaining competitiveness in the market.

Frontek, with its ventilated façade system, has the potential to contribute significantly to LEED certification, potentially earning up to 47 LEED points.
